About psychoanalysis

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a collaborative process of understanding the patterns, experiences and relationships that shape your life.

What does psychoanalytic psychotherapy look like?

River stones and pebbles

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy usually involves meeting weekly, although meeting more frequently can lead to more rapid and profound changes and may be necessary for complex problems.

Contemporary relational psychoanalysis has progressed far from the caricature of the silent "blank-screen" analyst. We engage in a dialogue — a collaborative process of understanding what is happening in your life and how it relates to past experiences. By helping you understand yourself better, psychoanalysis can offer powerful tools for self-awareness and authentic connection to self and others.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be an effective treatment approach for depression, anxiety, PTSD, relationship difficulties, gender and sexuality issues, emotional constriction, fear of intimacy, and feelings of being stuck or held back.

The aim is to get to the cause of the problem, rather than simply treating the symptoms. People often turn to psychoanalysis when medication or short-term approaches, like CBT, have not been helpful enough. It is not a quick fix, but deep and lasting change can be the outcome.

Do Medicare rebates apply for psychotherapy?

Medicare rebates apply to all consultations with no cap on the number of sessions. Once you have reached the Medicare Safety Net threshold, the remainder of your sessions for that calendar year will attract a rebate of 80% of the out-of-pocket costs.

This also applies to online consultations.
